About the lecture:
The ‘ship as a unit’ rule is a procedural rule that allows the flag State to also act on behalf of crew members of the ship that have a different nationality. This seems a practical rule that the crew benefits from. Perhaps it is not as simple as that.


About Judge Liesbeth Lijnzaad:

Dr. Liesbeth Lijnzaad is a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (since 2017) and is President of the Chamber for Marine Environment Disputes (since October 2023) and a member of the Seabed Disputes Chamber (since 2020). She is a Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, and a conciliator and arbitrator under UNCLOS Annexes V and VII. Previously, she was the principal Legal Adviser on Public International Law at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and head of its international law department (2006-2017).

Dr. Lijnzaad is also endowed Professor Practice of International Law at Maastricht University (since 2011). Her research interests are amongst others the Law of the Sea, the Laws of Armed Conflict, Feminism and International Law as well as the Sources of International Law. She is the chair of the Supervisory Board of the T. M. C. Asser Institute in The Hague (since 2021).
